Activities
Leading the Maritime Human Element Centre (MHEC) of the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI). MHEC addresses the
maritime sector’s human, organisational, and societal dimensions across the
full lifecycle of maritime operations, from education and workforce entry
to shipboard and shore-based work, to technology adoption and system
change.
The Centre’s objectives
are to:
- Strengthen maritime
education and training by aligning curricula and learning methods with
evolving roles, skills needs, and competence requirements.
- Improve safety, human
performance, and human reliability by advancing human factors practice,
safety learning, and effective incident investigation.
- Support well-being,
mental health, inclusion, and quality of working life for seafarers and
shore-based professionals, recognising the pressures of modern maritime work.
- Enable responsible
adoption of new technologies (e.g., automation and autonomy) by ensuring
systems are designed and implemented with people at the centre.
- Provide evidence-based
guidance for industry and policymakers through applied research,
evaluation, and stakeholder engagement.
- Foster collaboration
between industry, academia, training providers, and communities,
promoting knowledge exchange and solutions with real-world impact.
