Dr. Brown was a senior program manager with the U.S. Minerals Management service, having managed over thirty U.S. government offshore studies projects between 1978-1999, mainly involving the Gulf of Mexico. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Duke University in 1969, and a Licentiate Scientiarum (Ph.D.) in Marine Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen in 1975. From 1993, Dr. Brown was a frequent participant in IOC/IODE marine data training program, OceanTeacher Academy (OTA), on several continents, training hundreds of marine scientists from dozens of countries. He currently works out of his home, near Daytona Beach, Florida, where he edits the training resource MarineDataLiteracy.org.
