Under the auspices of the UNESCO-IOC Working Group on Tsunamis and Other Hazards Related to Sea-Level Warning and Mitigation Systems (TOWS-WG) and the IHO WWNWS-SC, a standardized framework has been developed for issuing maritime tsunami service messages tailored to the needs of the maritime community. These products are designed to support NAVAREA Coordinators in rapidly disseminating tsunami-related maritime safety information.
The upcoming IOWave25 tsunami exercise on 5 November 2025 offers a valuable opportunity to trial these maritime tsunami products in a simulated operational environment. During the exercise, TSPs will issue test bulletins to NAVAREA Coordinators for evaluation and feedback, which will inform finalization of the product formats and dissemination protocols.
The webinar will:
- Present the maritime tsunami message framework and product types
- Clarify roles and procedures for NAVAREA Coordinators during tsunami events
- Outline expectations for participation in the IOWave25 product testing
- Facilitate coordination between TSPs and NAVAREA Coordinators
