Activities

The Secretary of Health through the State Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COEPRIS); is responsible for establishing a permanent and systematic monitoring and analysis plan in seawater for the identification, classification and quantification of toxic phytoplankton species, in order to implement preventive actions in a timely manner and prevent cases of intoxication in human beings according to the Work Guideline for the sampling of Phytoplankton and Detection of Marine Biotoxins in Bivalve Molluscs. COEPRIS is also responsible for the application of security measures, such as precautionary closures and sanitary closures when marine toxins are confirmed outside the specification of the Official Mexican Standard NOM 242. If it sanctions those who do not comply with the provisions, it is also responsible for exercising the communication of risks to the population.
The Sanitary Authority of the federative entity where the phenomenon occurs, in coordination with COFEPRIS, are in charge of officially indicating when the sanitary ban is lifted, as long as the provisions of the Work Guidelines for Sanitary Control are complied with. of Mollusks Exposed to Harmful Algal Blooms. In case of not complying with the above, the harvest prohibition will be maintained and the control of the closed areas will remain, until the State Sanitary Regulation Directorate determines that the emergency stage has been overcome.
