Activities

The Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability of Pernambuco (Semas-PE) was created in 2011, with the objective of expanding attention and reach in solving environmental problems in the state. Rather, the task of taking care of state environmental policies is within the scope of the Secretariat for Science and Technology and the Environment.

Semas today has as main element to formulate, update and implement as Public Environmental Policies of the State. Sectorized state policies are a milestone in the treatment of environmental issues in Pernambuco. They are: State Policy for Confronting Climate Change, State Policy for Coastal Management, State Policy for Solid Waste,  State Forest Policy and Environmental Education Policy of Pernambuco.

The portfolio is also responsible, through the State Environment Agency - CPRH, for carrying out activities related to environmental licensing and inspection, in addition to promoting actions of environmental education, standardization, control, regularization, protection, recovery and recovery of natural resources. .

The Dois Irmãos State Park and the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago are still linked to Semas-PE. The first is public equipment administered directly by the portfolio. It houses one of the largest urban fragments of Atlantic forest in the state and the zoo in Recife. Noronha, on the other hand, constitutes the geoeconomic, social and cultural region of the State, with the nature of a territorial autarchy, endowed with autonomy. 

In addition, all actions of Semas-PE are strengthened by the performance of the State Environmental Council of Pernambuco (Consema-PE), by various forums and thematic committees that expand dialogue with civil society, by projects financed by the State Fund of the State of Pernambuco. Environment (Fema) and the creation of the Social and Environmental ICMS.

MAIN ATRIBUTIONS

- Coordinate the basis, execution, evaluation and updating of the State Environment and Sustainability Policy;

- Analyze and monitor as sectorial public policies that have an impact on the environment;

- Articulate and coordinate plans and actions related to the environmental area;

- Carry out the State's duties relating to environmental licensing and inspection; 

- Promote actions of environmental education, control, regularization, valuation, protection, conservation and recovery of natural resources;

- Delegate and invoke attributions and competencies for their autarchies, foundations and public partners; and apply, inclusive resources from environmental compensation.
