Activities
My professional activities focus on the application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to strengthen climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihoods in coastal and marine environments, particularly within the Western Indian Ocean region.
I support the planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of community-led NbS interventions across the Tanga–Pemba seascape. My work involves working closely with coastal communities, local resource management institutions, government authorities, civil society organisations, technical partners, and other stakeholders to develop practical approaches that address climate and environmental challenges while supporting local livelihoods and ecosystem health.
Key activities include:
• Nature-based Solutions and Climate Adaptation: Supporting the application of NbS and ecosystem-based adaptation approaches to address climate-related risks affecting coastal communities and marine ecosystems. This includes participatory assessment of local contexts, identification of climate and environmental risks, development and prioritisation of adaptation actions, implementation, and monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL).
• Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Restoration: Supporting restoration and conservation initiatives targeting key coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and coastal forests. Activities include site assessment, restoration planning, community mobilisation, implementation support, monitoring, and documentation of restoration outcomes.
• Community-led Conservation: Working with coastal communities and local institutions, including Beach Management Units (BMUs) and Shehia Fisheries Committees (SFCs), to strengthen community participation in marine conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable resource management, and climate resilience.
• Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Monitoring: Supporting ecological monitoring and assessment of coastal and marine ecosystems using field-based and participatory approaches. This includes mangrove monitoring, coral reef assessments, fish surveys, seagrass monitoring, and other biodiversity and ecosystem assessments.
• Data Collection, Management and Analysis: Supporting collection, management, quality assurance, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation of environmental and socio-economic data. Digital tools such as KoboToolbox/ODK are used to facilitate field data collection and monitoring.
• Spatial Mapping and GIS: Supporting mapping and spatial assessment of coastal and marine ecosystems and restoration areas to inform planning, prioritisation, monitoring, and decision-making.
• Community Capacity Building: Supporting training, mentorship, knowledge exchange, and capacity strengthening for coastal communities, community-based organisations, local institutions, and other stakeholders on NbS, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, marine conservation, monitoring, and sustainable livelihood approaches.
• Sustainable Blue Economy: Contributing to initiatives that link healthy marine and coastal ecosystems with sustainable livelihoods and blue economy opportunities, while promoting sustainable use and conservation of marine resources.
• Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination: Facilitating collaboration among communities, government institutions, research organisations, conservation organisations, development partners, and other stakeholders involved in coastal and marine management.
• Knowledge Management and Learning: Documenting experiences, lessons learned, good practices, challenges, and evidence from NbS interventions to support adaptive management, knowledge exchange, replication, and scaling of successful approaches.
• Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: Supporting development and implementation of monitoring and learning systems to track ecological, social, and resilience outcomes of NbS interventions, including the use of indicators, field monitoring, data analysis, reporting, and learning processes.
• Technical Reporting and Communication: Preparing technical reports, activity reports, field documentation, concept notes, presentations, knowledge products, and other technical materials to communicate project progress, results, lessons, and recommendations.
• Regional Knowledge Exchange: Contributing to regional learning and professional networks related to Nature-based Solutions, coastal resilience, marine conservation, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable blue economy across the Western Indian Ocean.
Overall, my activities seek to strengthen the connection between science, local knowledge, community action, policy, and practical implementation to promote resilient coastal communities and healthy marine and coastal ecosystems.
Comment(s)
I am a Nature-based Solutions (NbS) practitioner with experience in coastal and marine ecosystem conservation, restoration, climate change adaptation, and community-led approaches to building resilience. My work focuses on connecting science, local knowledge, community action, and institutional planning to develop practical and scalable solutions for coastal and marine challenges.
I am particularly interested in mangrove, seagrass and coral reef restoration; ecosystem-based adaptation; sustainable blue economy; participatory coastal management; and strengthening the capacity of coastal communities and local institutions. I am also interested in knowledge exchange, innovation, monitoring and learning, and advancing the application and scaling of Nature-based Solutions across the Western Indian Ocean region.
