The County Department of Water Services deals with provision of Water and Sanitation(sewerage) services in Lamu County, Kenya.
Human settlements are both in the Islands and the mainland. Groundwater, (Harvesting) Rain Water, Lakes, Ponds and Sea Water (desalination) are the main raw water sources for public, livestock and small-scale irrigation water supplies. Access to Water for domestic, Institutional, livestock and small-scale irrigation is one of the biggest challenges facing the county.
The challenge is exacerbated by the destruction of wetlands & ecosystems in the mainland; climate change induced extreme hydrological events of drought; Pressure on fresh water resources following increase in water demand as a result of immigration, population & economic growth caused by the new Lamu port and; Coastal pollution due to lack of sewerage and solid waste management systems in major urban centers of Amu, Mpeketoni, Mokowe-Hindi, Witu & Faza
