IOC/EC-LI/2 Annex 3

REVISED ROADMAP FOR THE UN DECADE OF OCEAN SCIENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Summary

By Resolution A/RES/72/73, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the UN
Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) in
December 2017 and mandated the IOC to prepare an Implementation Plan
in consultation with Member States, UN partners and other relevant
stakeholders.

A Roadmap, detailing the governance arrangements of the preparation
phase, as well as the preliminary objectives and expected outcomes of the
Decade, was developed under the guidance of IOC Officers and circulated
to IOC Member States through Circular Letter 2712 for comments. The
present document provides a revised version of the Roadmap building on
comments and inputs from Member States, UN partners and the Interim
Planning Group established by the IOC Chairperson. A summary of inputs
received is provided in Appendix 7 of the document. In the revised
Roadmap, the Executive Planning Group is tasked with the development of
the Implementation Plan as presented in section 3.1.2. Its terms of reference
(including the selection process) are presented in document IOC/EC-LI/2
Annex 4.

Financial implications are expected to be supported through extra-budgetary
contributions.

The proposed decision: The Executive Council is invited to take note of the
revised roadmap. A Draft Resolution EC-LI/DR.(4.1) submitted by Norway
and the Republic of Korea is presented in the Action Paper (document
IOC/EC-LI/2 Prov.)
