Job type Research
Research Area(s) Chemical Oceanography , Chemical Oceanography
Research Activities My work focuses on the chemical, biological, and physical processes which affect trace element distributions and behavior in marine and freshwater environments. Due to their involvement if biochemical processes, trace elements may limit biological productivity at low concentrations but can be toxic at only slightly elevated concentrations. Since organisms are extremely sensitive to the actual chemical forms (redox states and solution species) in which trace elements may be found, it is important to develop and apply new or improved sampling and analytical methods which can distinguish between, for example, free ionic species, colloidal and particulate forms, and metal complexes with dissolved organic and inorganic ligands. Such speciation information is essential to our understanding of such basic processes as phytoplankton nutrition and growth; contamination of lakes, rivers, groundwaters, and the coastal ocean; and physical mixing in estuaries and the oceans.
