Research Activities "Generation of sodium motive force in extremely alkaliphilic cyanobacterium Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis supplies by photosynthesis." The effect of sodium ions in photosynthesis, generation of membrane potential and movement in A. platensis under alkaline conditions has been studied. It is concluded that the sodium depended uncoupler-resistant movement of extremely alkalophylic cyanobacterium Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis is energized by photosynthesis. A kind of primary sodium pump is supposed to energize the plasma membrane of Arthrospira platensis rather than the system of proton pump (Krulvich 1996) and Na+/H+ antiporter (Boussiba 1996). Bioenergetic features of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis allow suggesting that the cyanobacterium possesses the Sodium Coupling Cycle of energetics rather then Proton Coupling one.
