Research Activities Research on the population dynamics of fishes and sharks, with particular emphasis on the application of otolith-based technologies for estimating age, growth, stock structure (using otolith elemental fingerprints), migration patterns and recruitment. Recent research has focused on the theoretical basis for, and the application of, daily growth increments in otoliths, as well as the trace element and isotopic composition of otoliths for use in reconstructing environmental histories and stock identity. My lab is also using nuclear fallout signatures to determine the age of long-lived fishes, and has developed robust indices for assessing ageing precision and back-calculating growth. Finally, I also lead an active research program on the population dynamics, movements and age determination of sharks.
