Job type Teaching/Education , Research , Technical Advice & Consulting
Research Activities

Xiaoming Wang attended Tsinghua University in China from 1993 to 2001, where he received his bachelor degree in Hydraulic Engineering (1998) and master degree in Coastal Engineering (2001). His work focused on hydraulic engineering and coastal structure design, hydraulic/wave tank experiments and wave-structure interactions. Shortly after receiving his PhD in the field of Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology at Cornell University, USA, he joined in the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Science (GNS Science) of New Zealand, as a tsunami research scientist and has been chairing Tsunami Experts Panel (TEP) of New Zealand since 2012. His research interests have been focused on a better understanding of ocean and coastal processes, including ocean wave dynamics and their impacts on coastal regions. Tsunamis are of particular interest. He has extensive knowledge of and experience on tsunami generation mechanisms, landslides and landslide tsunami, tsunami propagation, coastal flooding modelling, and tsunami hazard and risk analysis. He is a key developer of one of the leading tsunami and coastal flooding simulation model – COMCOT (Cornell Multi-grid Coupled Tsunami), widely used by research institutes and researchers worldwide.
