PROFESSIONAL DATA

Degree Bsc (Physics), Msc (Coastal engineering)
Job type Research
Research Area(s) Physical Oceanography , Physical Oceanography
Research Activities 1. Coastal hydrodynamics and morphodynamics 2. Coastal Sediment transport and morphological modelling 3. Modeling of Tsunami Inundation and Hazard Mitigation 4. Coastal Zone Management
Research Region 71
Skills/Expertise 1. Morphological modelling (Delft3d, unibest LT+, x-Beach) During the master programe at Unesco IHE and under the internship program at Deltares, Netherlands i have specialized the morphological modelling tools such as DELFT3D Wave/Flow, X-Beach and UniBest CL+. Also I am well versed with MATLAB environment. 2. Oceanographic instrumentation At Oceanography division NARA, I learned planning and conducting their field deployment and analyzing the resulting data collection of various oceanographic parameters such as CTD (seabird 9 plus, seabird 19 plus), Echo sounders (bathymetry survey), Sub bottom profilers, Passive Acoustics Systems- Hydrophones (under water Acoustics), Surface drifters and ARGO, Sea level gauges (radar/pressure) and Acoustic Doppler Current Meter (ADCP) etc. 3. Ocean data and information systems I also served as leading member of the project team, which worked on the nationally important project such as Colombo Port City Development Project, offshore sand mining project (Negombo, Sri Lanka) and passive acoustic monitoring system on the oil exploring project at Mannar Sri Lanka. Moreover, I used to work as the responsible officer of the Ocean observation and early response centre (24x7) at NARA. For the centre, I have developed a numerical model for real time DART and sea level data analysis, which is used for assessing the tsunami generation. My initiatives contributed to Sri Lanka (NARA) becoming an ARGO deploying nation. I am also trying to constitute a team use ARGO data to assess the seasonal characteristics of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), correlation between the IOD phases and intensity of monsoon.
