Research Activities

Prof. Suzan Kholeif, is an oceanographer, marine geologist and ecologist since 1984. She has a massive experience (28/8/1994- until date) in the field of climate changes, monitoring of marine pollution; coastal and land use, including map surveys tools on the coast (coastal topography), Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) of water bodies. Prof. Kholeif has gained skills in developing and managing both managerial and technical tasks, as is demonstrated through her work experience in the role of Director of Scientific Documentation and Media Unit, Head of Marine Geology Lab and Director of National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Alexandria, Egypt, as well as across several national and international projects and consultancies in the field of marine environment, climate change, Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and  management of fisheries and aquaculture. She also acquired a solid reputation as expert, consultant and evaluator, in the last 10 years at both national and international levels, especially in the field of water resources monitoring and planning and ICZM in Mediterranean countries (particularly in Egypt and North Africa countries), by developing guidelines for sustainable use and innovation methodology for management of wild resources, focusing on ecological cycles of the aquatic resources in the Mediterranean region and developing an Integrated Coastal Zone Management strategy of Nile Delta, Egypt, as well as capacity building and education guidelines for Egyptian scientists, and public sector.

Suzan Kholeif holds PhD of Marine Geology, Faculty of Science, Cairo University (with support of TU Berlin, Germany, with practical part, as a scientific channel), and promoted to Professor of marine geology (Climate change; marine pollution monitoring by bio-indicators), National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries-NIOF, Alexandria, Egypt.

Current Position: Director of National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries - Mediterranean and Northern Lakes Branch, Alexandria Egypt.

- Head of the Oceanography and food production Standing Committee for professors promotions

Skills/Expertise

-  Prof. Kholeif is an experienced Egyptian marine geologist, with 20+ years professional experience in Oceanography which includes Marine Geology which includes study of Erosion, accretion, sediment transport, land-Sea interface changes, shore protection, climate change, pollution monitoring using bio-indicators, vegetation, hydrographic changes and sea level changes as well as Environment Impact Assessment (EIA). In addition, since 2007, her efforts are focusing on the field of Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) using many tools such as; sustainability indicators (include geomorphological and land use changes, coastal changes), environmental accounting, scenarios, participatory methods and social and economic valuation techniques. For enhance her capability to work with ICZM, she received several type of international training .

-  Experience in developing a management plan and strategy of Fishers management activates in Mediterranean Sea, as well as in Coastal Zone Management (the Shore protection structures of the coastal areas of the Nile Delta, preparation of integrated coastal management plan for the Nile Delta, and to review and approval the programs and master plans for coastal areas that may be exposed to environmental pressures or environmental degradation),  monitoring of pollution of marine water, environmental assessment (Environmental Impact Assessment  of wetlands, ...), developing a management plan of Fishers management activates in Mediterranean Sea;

-  Extensive experience in using the DPSIR model and SWOT analysis tool for assessment the effects of environmental change on ecosystem.

·- Experienced in institutional relations, to work and dialogue with Government executive officers ad authorities; Prof. Kholeif, for the first time in Egypt, established the public body “Nile Delta Coastal Group” (March 2011) with certain mission and official decree. It includes representatives from stakeholders and authorities and policy makers and facilitates the communication between public, private and policy makers. The mission, of this committee is to help the preparation of integrated coastal management and plans for the coastal areas and review land use national maps and approval the development projects, programs and plans in coastal areas that may be exposed to environmental pressures or environmental degradation.

·- Built up a solid reputation as expert in marine environment (Sea-level changes, hydrographic changes, pollution Monitoring), both at international and national level (eg, Expert in EU bodies IASON, MIRA, ERAMEDNET, ECAP, & SME company, Wageningen, Netherland and GeoImaging Ltd, Cyprus,..)

- She managed and coordinated several national and international projects, works and activities related to the environment, climate changes theme, ICZM, dynamic indicators and modelling for water pollution, aquatic resources and capacity building (see organization section), which enabled her to accumulate considerable experience (more than a decade) in the field of management, Land-Sea interface activities, water monitoring, implementation of development projects which provide a broad understanding of international environmental directives and conventions as; Marine Framework Strategic Directives; Ecosystem Approach, Good Environmental Status; Horizon2020 and Barcelona Convention.

·         She establishment the Public Awareness annual workshop for international & national organizations and stakeholders entitled "Marine and Coastal Zone Environmental Management: Risk Analysis and Mitigation for sustainable growth, ERAM"  (www.eram-ws.co), October 2010. This international awareness body is supported by most of international organizations and intergovernmental bodies as IOC, UNEP, MEDPOL, Plan Bleu, CIEZM, IAEA, IFREMER, (see the website). Unfortunately it temporary stopped because the current situation. Could be continued in 2015. Besides she established “Scientific documentation and Media Unit” which help NIOF to facilitate the communication with other international institutions to sharing the scientific information and orgainize the scientific cooperation, conferences and workshops, [Agreed and established by NIOF’president no, 100 year 2005].

- Experience in, Coastal Zone Management-ICZM using many tools such as sustainability indicators, environmental accounting, scenarios, participatory methods and social and economic valuation techniques. In this context, in the frame of PEGASO-FP7 project, She has established and chaired the National Group of Stakeholders and Policy makers for developing National Strategy of Nile delta ICZM (March 2011-2013) with special mandate and duties, this to help with the preparation of integrated coastal management plan for the Nile Delta, and to review and approval the programs and master plans for coastal areas that may be exposed to environmental pressures or environmental degradation. The output was; solving the conflict of Land-use plans, and revising the Shore protection structures of the coastal areas of the Nile Delta of three governorates, Bohira, Kafer El Sheik and Dakahlia. Also, the past and future sea-level changes in the Nile Delta has been revised and predicted.
