Degree Ph.D.
Job type Research
Research Area(s) Marine Biotechnology, Marine Products , Marine Biotechnology, Marine Products
Research Activities Senior Scientist, Head of Membrane Biochemistry Laboratory at Physiology & Biophysics Department, Faculty of Medicine. University of Chile
Research Region 84
Working languages English, Spanish
Skills/Expertise General expertise in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Toxicology and Biotechnologies associated to phycotoxins produced by dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. Ongoing research programs involve the development of new techniques for purification, production, identification, detection and quantification these toxic compounds. Massive culturing of microalgae, developing studies in cell physiology methods to directly control blooms. Professor Doctor Lagos also head a team of 16 investigators from 6 institutions who are conducting a long term research in Biotechnology associated to clinical and veterinarian applications of biotoxins. His field work is developed in the Chilean Fjords and in the East and West coasts of the southern areas of South America, Strait of Magelland. He also was member of the Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) Scientific Steering Committee, an international program sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO). (http://www.geohab.info). In the last 10 years, we are doing research and publishing in animal and human clinical applications, testing the PSP toxins as therapeutical compounds. For the firts time ficotoxins are used in Human Clinical Trials with amazing results. Our last clinical manuscript  has been shoose  and recomended by F1000PRIME in 2015.
