Research Activities Led the first management plan for the most extensive ecosystem of mangrove forest and coral reef on the Central Atlantic coast of Panama. The goal was to improve economic opportunities for local communities and industries in the area. Coordinator of an International Meetings in Panama. Coordinated workshop about the management plan with environmental agencies in Panama, industries and environmental agencies of California in collaboration with the University of California, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Amistad Foundation, Panama and Elkhorn Slough Foundation. Experience Remote Sensing and Photogrametry Interpretation of the Area. Used the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory to analyze Landsat 4 satellite image of the region using a multispectral scanner (MSS). Compared images with one hundred thirty-four (134) aerial photographs (scale 1:12000), and designed maps of the region to determine accuracy. Surveyed Coastal Residents and Industries within the Area. Directed a team of five sociologist from the private and government agencies to survey coastal residents to determine social and economic needs. Established Seaweed Farming Gracilaria species as an Alternative Source and Income. Coordinated a pilot study with local fishermen and Texaco refinery established some management and farming practice. Used atomic absorption technique to identified percentage of heavy metal in the alga tissue.
