Research Activities My current research project involves the investigation of responses of micro and macroalgae to heavy metal induced oxidative stress. The cultures I am working with are of economical and biotechnological value: the microalgae Tetraselmis sp is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and therefore of nutritive value for aquacultured fish and bivalves; the macroalgae Gracilaria sp, an important source of agar, is of great interest for the industries of food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Recently I have been engaged in research on Amazonian aquatic systems.

Skills/Expertise I investigate plankton responses to environmental pollution in laboratory and field conditions. I am particularly interested in the biomarkers phytochelatins, homologues and glutathione, the modulation of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase, etc and lipid peroxidation in algal cells.
