Job type Teaching/Education
Research Area(s) Marine and Coastal Engineering , Marine and Coastal Engineering
Research Activities Using students, ages 13 to 17, develop an enhanced vector shoreline map of the world at a consistent scale of 1:62,500. On it's own, the shoreline map would be invaluable to a wide variety of end users. The bonus is to train the next generation of map makers through the management and development of a useful and practical mapping product. Upon completion of the EVS World Map, other layers of information could be added (rivers, lakes, city/village locations, etc.).
Research Region Islands and continental shorelines of the world
Skills/Expertise Create extremely accurate, highly detailed, pleasant appearance and highly flexible maps of islands. Work with Landsat ETM+ 2000 imagery and DigitalGlobe imagery. From these base images I digitize island shorelines, vegetation, reefs and other layers, as needed. I then post completed map images on my web site http://evs-islands.blogspot.com. Major projects include, mapping over 10,000 islands located throughout the Pacific Ocean, detailed mapping of the Falkland Islands, detailed mapping of the Federated States of Micronesia.
