Activities

The Centre for Marine and Climate Research (ZMK) was founded on 22November 1989 following a request by the University of Hamburg to theSenator for Science and Research. It has the status of a research focusaccording to § 74,2 of the Hamburg Law for Higher Education of 27 May2003 and possesses its own constitution The ZMK is dedicated to free, interdisciplinary marine, climate andenvironmental research. It carries out basic and applied research,particularly in the following fields: * Interactions between ocean and atmosphere, * Interactions between ocean and geosphere, * Aquatic ecosystems, * Status and change in the marine and atmospheric environment, * Socio-economic effects of global change. Based on these constitutional objectives, the Centre formulates medium term research programmeswhich are regularly updated. It carries out its programme incooperation with institutes, research groups and individual scientistsoutside the ZMK. This is particularly the case with respect to the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the German High Performance Computing Centre for Climate and Earth System Research (DKRZ) with its group "Models and Data", the GKSSresearch centre in Geesthacht and the related faculties of theUniversity and other institutes for marine, climate and environmentalresearch in the Hamburg area.
