Summary Eutrophication is recognized as one of the factors contributing to the increasing proliferation of harmful algal blooms in coastal areas worldwide. The first Open Science Meeting on “HABs in eutrophic systems” was held in Baltimore in 2005. This second meeting is designed to bring experts together from around the world to review the current state-of-the-art knowledge on eutrophication and HABs, and to foster international collaboration on this critical global issue.
