DIPS/OBIS scientific data analysis workshop

Event Type Workshop
Date(s)(yyyy-mm-dd) Start: 2015-12-07 - End: 2015-12-11

Summary Rationale In 2013, the OBIS steering group decided that OBIS needs to include science and applications in its mission, serving the full cycle from Data to Analysis – Information – Applications and Decision Support. As a response to this, OBIS established a science advisory task team with the objectives to identify new directions, potential pilot projects and areas of development for data-driven research and its applications. In addition, the OBIS data content enhancement task team’s role is to look into the existing Darwin Core terms and extensions and develop new terms and extensions driven by new requirements and applications. The Government of Flanders (Belgium) granted us a project to Develop Information Products and Services for Ocean Assessments (DIPS-4- Ocean Assessments) based on OBIS to serve major global assessments on the state of the marine environment, such as the UN World Ocean Assessment and those that are planned as part of the recently established Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). This workshop is funded through the DIPS-4-Ocean Assessments project. Objectives The objective of this workshop is to start building on the development of at least one new biodiversity indicator based on data in OBIS (through the development of specific data analysis tools). In addition, it should support identifying requirements of future data collection in OBIS.
